Most people say that Rugby was originated from American Football. In contrast to this statement of many, Rugby was brought to American in its early days. Both types of sports are claiming that the concept and origin was developed by each one of them but most historians say that Rugby started this sport.

Just by the number of players you can see the big difference between the two sports. American Football is with 11 players to start the game while Rugby players are divided into backs and forwards. Total number of players for a Rugby game is 15.

One of the biggest reasons why these 2 games are mostly compared is the game field. The actual measure of the field is very similar. If you know both games, you will definitely identify that the lines in the field differ from each game type.

4.  Body Contact

Rules of the 2 types of sports are different in a lot of ways. This also applies on the rules for body contact of the players. All team member of Rugby playing in the field has the right to manage the ball. Hence, they claim to be more in control of the ball rather than American football.

”Touchdown” is the term used for American football when a player scores while “try” is the term used for Rugby. Some Rugby fans say that the word touchdown is actually from try.  To score a try for a Rugby league, the ball should actually “touch the ground” unlike the Touchdown as the score of American football that players do not actually need to let the ball touch the ground.

9.  Duration of the game

Rugby game consists of 2 sets with 40 minutes each halve. On the other hand, American Football is divided into four quarters with 15 minutes duration for each. The length of each quarter made a lot of range for the comparison of these two sports.

Fans of American football mostly come from North and South America while Rugby enthusiasts are mainly from Europe and Australia. Fans ethnicity diversity gives American football and Rugby their distinction.
